Studying abroad from Somalia: what to budget beyond tuition
Tuition is only part of the cost of studying abroad. From tests and translations to visa trips, deposits and winter clothes, here is how to plan for every stage, before and after you travel.
When students plan to study abroad, they usually focus on tuition fees. Tuition matters, but it is only one part of the cost. Many other expenses come earlier, arrive all at once, or are easy to forget. Some are specific to applying from Somalia.
This guide walks through the costs in the order you are likely to meet them.

Stage 1: Preparing and applying
These costs can start a year or more before you travel:
- Passport: a new passport or renewal, if yours expires soon.
- Language tests: many universities ask for an English test result; the test fee, and sometimes travel to a test centre.
- Application fees: some universities charge a fee for each application.
- Documents: certified copies, official translations and, in some cases, attestation of certificates by the relevant authorities.
- Sending documents: courier costs if originals must be posted.
Stage 2: Visa and travel
This is often the most expensive stage before you leave, and it can bring surprises.
- Visa application fee and, for some destinations, a health surcharge or required insurance.
- Medical tests that some countries require.
- Travel to another country for your visa appointment. Some destinations have no visa processing centre in Somalia. For example, as of September 2026, Chevening's official Somalia page states there are no UK visa processing centres or TB testing facilities in Somalia, so successful applicants must travel to another country for both. Budget for flights, accommodation and food during that trip.
- Flights to your destination.
Always check the current rules for your destination and visa type on official government pages. They change.
Stage 3: Arrival and your first month
The first weeks cost more than an ordinary month:
- Housing: a deposit, and often the first month's rent in advance.
- Setting up: bedding, kitchen basics, a local SIM card, a transport card.
- Weather: a warm coat and shoes if you are moving somewhere cold.
- Waiting for money: a stipend or wages may not arrive straight away, so plan to cover your first few weeks yourself.
Stage 4: Ongoing living costs
Then come the regular monthly costs: rent, food, transport, phone and data, study materials and personal items. Universities often publish estimated living costs for their city. Use those as your starting point, then build your own monthly budget.
Don't forget
- Money transfer costs. Fees and exchange rates apply every time money moves between countries.
- An emergency buffer. Keep money aside for a lost phone, a medical cost or an unexpected trip home.
- Proof of funds. Some visa routes ask for evidence that you have enough money for fees and living costs. Check exactly what your destination accepts, and when it must be shown.
When the money is needed
The timing is often harder than the total. Here is one imagined applicant's costs, month by month.

In this example, more than $4,000 is spent before the first stipend could arrive, most of it in the three months around the visa and travel. Planning early lets you save, ask family in good time, or check whether your award covers any of these costs.
